Worn Brake Pads

Steering Wheel Shaking When Hitting Brakes

If you’ve noticed the steering wheel shake when you’re pressing down on the brake pedal, then the issue could be related to the brakes themselves. If your car is pulling to one side of the road when you hit the brakes, we’ll work to diagnose the issue.

Today, most cars feature a disc brake system with the brake rotor attached to the wheel. Brake pads, attached to the caliper, protect the caliper and rotor. If the brake pads are wearing down, they might need to be replaced. As they begin to thin, they’ll screech or squeal, letting you know it’s time to replace them.

Tire Service

Wheel Shakes While Driving

If the wheel begins to shake while you’re driving, particularly when you’re out on the highway, then it’s likely an issue with the tires. So, the next time you’re on the Schuylkill––and traffic is actually moving––if you notice the wheel shaking at around 55 MPH, let us know.

A common cause here is a new tire. The tire may not have been properly balanced, which can cause the steering wheel to shake. Tires must be balanced, so the weight is evenly distributed. It’s also possible that a tire alignment may be needed. Hitting potholes and curbs can add up.

If the wheel shakes when driving at low speeds, then we’ll inspect the suspension. A misaligned suspension can impact vehicle stability. As you’ve seen, there are a few possible causes for your steering wheel to shake. Bring your vehicle into our service center, and our technicians will let you know which services are needed.
